ICC Welcomes Medical Laboratory Technician Program Students for Fall 2016
ICC is pleased to announce students in its Medical Laboratory Technician Program for Fall 2016! Students in the ICC Medical Laboratory Technician Program complete 65 hours of coursework to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. Clinical experiences are provided in labs in Illinois and Iowa. Under the supervision of Medical Laboratory Scientists, MLTs perform most of the common laboratory tests in a medical laboratory. They use microscopes and other high-tech, computer-operated equipment to analyze body fluids and cells; look for bacteria, parasites and other organisms; analyze the chemical content of fluids; match blood for transfusion; and test for drug levels in the blood to gauge a patient's response to treatment. ICC Welcomes Dental Hygienist Program Students for Fall 2016
ICC is pleased to announce students in its Dental Hygienist Program for Fall 2016! Students in the ICC Dental Hygienist Program complete 81.5 hours to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. Students receive extensive clinical experience in the ICC Dental Hygiene Clinic and selected agencies. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and a regional/state examination for registration as a Dental Hygienist in Illinois and in other states. The dental hygienist works under the supervision of the dentist in dental offices and other health agencies by performing duties delegated by the dentist. Duties include cleaning teeth, exposing x-rays, providing oral healthcare instructions to patients, and maintaining patient records. ICC Chamber Singers Perform for Loaves and Fish Guests
ICC Chamber Singers recently took time out from their music retreat to sing a great spiritual for the guests dining at the Loaves and Fish feeding ministry at the First United Methodist Church in Peoria, Ill. A Loaves and Fish volunteer told the group that they had an unexpected effect on one of their reserved weekly guests. The volunteer said that, as the students started to sing, the woman stopped eating and turned to listen with a smile on her face. The volunteer said it is the first time she has seen this guest smile in months. Thank you, ICC Chamber Singers, for spreading your joy of music!

ICC Welcomes Respiratory Therapy Program Students for Fall 2016
ICC is proud to welcome students in the Respiratory Therapy Program for Fall 2016! Respiratory care is a health care specialty involving the prevention, treatment, management and rehabilitation of people with lung problems. As part of the medical team, respiratory care personnel are instrumental in life support and emergency measures. Practitioners must be experts in providing specialized and selective therapeutic respiratory care in such areas as medical gas administration, humidity and aerosol administration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and ventilatory support. The respiratory care practitioner must also be capable of performing pulmonary function studies, blood gas analysis and other related physiologic monitoring. ICC Horticulture Program Students Participate in Design Challenge
ICC Horticulture Program students currently are participating in the "Come Alive Outside Design Challenge," which provides an opportunity for teams of post-secondary and secondary students to work together with landscape professionals to design and build engaging outdoor learning environments at schools and childcare facilities. ICC students will partner with Come Alive Outside, The Kitchen Community, and Christy Webber Landscapes to create an outdoor learning environment for Hanson Park Elementary School in Chicago, Ill. Teams have until Dec. 2 to finalize proposals, which will be judged by a professional panel and voted on by the community of teachers and parents at Hanson Park. All submissions will be featured at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show in March 2017. The winning design will be announced in December, with the winning design scheduled to be built on the school grounds in the spring of 2017.

ICC Students Win Blick Madness Painting Competition
ICC students brought home a gold trophy from the Blick Madness Painting Competition, hosted by Dick Blick art store, on September 22, 2016. The students competed as a group and painted a fall scene, complete with campfire and pumpkins. The students had just an hour and a half to complete the painting. The group competed against other two- and four-year institutions in Illinois, including: Western Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, Monmouth College, Eureka College, Bradley University, and Carl Sandburg. ICC students have won the gold trophy in three out of the last five competitions.

ICC Student Matthew Goodyear Attends NASA Workshop
ICC Mechanical Engineering Technology student Matthew Goodyear was recently selected to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program in Huntsville, Ala., October 25-28. There he will have the opportunity to experience NASA first-hand and complete a project. NCAS encourages STEM students to finish a two-year degree or transfer to a four-year university to pursue a NASA-related field or career. Congratulations, Matthew!

ICC Students Volunteer for Worldwide Day of Play 2016
Three outstanding students in the early childhood education program gained some valuable real-world experience as volunteers at the Worldwide Day of Play at Glen Oak Park on Saturday, September 10. Students facilitated play as children were encouraged to try weaving with natural materials and construct critter houses for critter puppets, including a cricket, eagle, opossum, and butterfly. The volunteers gained a greater appreciation of the developmental potential of young children and learning by witnessing their imaginations and creativity.

Illinois Central College Announces 2016-17 Livestock Judging Team Members
These sophomore students will represent Illinois Central College at local, state and national livestock judging contests during the fall and spring semesters. Students in competition will evaluate classes of livestock on both phenotype (how the animals look) and genotype (an animal's genetic capabilities) and compare them to an "ideal". The students are scored on how closely they rank the animals to an official placing. In addition, the students give oral reasons to contest officials to justify their placings. These reasons are scored as well and help students sharpen their critical thinking skills and communication ability.
