ICC students brought home a gold trophy from the Blick Madness Painting Competition, hosted by Dick Blick art store, on September 22, 2016. The students competed as a group and painted a fall scene, complete with campfire and pumpkins. The students had just an hour and a half to complete the painting. The group competed against other two- and four-year institutions in Illinois, including: Western Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, Monmouth College, Eureka College, Bradley University, and Carl Sandburg. ICC students have won the gold trophy in three out of the last five competitions.

ICC Horticulture Program students currently are participating in the "Come Alive Outside Design Challenge," which provides an opportunity for teams of post-secondary and secondary students to work together with landscape professionals to design and build engaging outdoor learning environments at schools and childcare facilities. ICC students will partner with Come Alive Outside, The Kitchen Community, and Christy Webber Landscapes to create an outdoor learning environment for Hanson Park Elementary School in Chicago, Ill. Teams have until Dec. 2 to finalize proposals, which will be judged by a professional panel and voted on by the community of teachers and parents at Hanson Park. All submissions will be featured at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show in March 2017. The winning design will be announced in December, with the winning design scheduled to be built on the school grounds in the spring of 2017.

ICC welcomes students to the staff of the student newspaper, the Harbinger, for the 2016-17 academic year.

ICC Mechanical Engineering Technology student Matthew Goodyear was recently selected to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program in Huntsville, Ala., October 25-28. There he will have the opportunity to experience NASA first-hand and complete a project. NCAS encourages STEM students to finish a two-year degree or transfer to a four-year university to pursue a NASA-related field or career. Congratulations, Matthew!

Three outstanding students in the early childhood education program gained some valuable real-world experience as volunteers at the Worldwide Day of Play at Glen Oak Park on Saturday, September 10. Students facilitated play as children were encouraged to try weaving with natural materials and construct critter houses for critter puppets, including a cricket, eagle, opossum, and butterfly. The volunteers gained a greater appreciation of the developmental potential of young children and learning by witnessing their imaginations and creativity.

These sophomore students will represent Illinois Central College at local, state and national livestock judging contests during the fall and spring semesters. Students in competition will evaluate classes of livestock on both phenotype (how the animals look) and genotype (an animal's genetic capabilities) and compare them to an "ideal". The students are scored on how closely they rank the animals to an official placing. In addition, the students give oral reasons to contest officials to justify their placings. These reasons are scored as well and help students sharpen their critical thinking skills and communication ability.

ICC Criminal Justice Program student and former Police Explorer Program participant, Kelsey Terrell, recently was hired as a Peoria Police Cadet. Congratulations, Kelsey!

ICC Paralegal Program students completed their summer internships at various law firms, state's attorney's offices, legal aid offices, as well as local businesses. They earned 225 hours of real-world paralegal experience over the course of an eight-week summer semester. These ABA Approved Paralegal Program students did a fantastic job. Congratulations!

ICC Student Natalie Burmood recently was elected Vice President of Programs for 2016-17 at the 2016 State Leadership Conference held in Effingham, Ill.

Students in ICC's Criminal Justice Program this summer participated in internships to gain real-world perspectives on a potential career field.

Illinois Central College, East Peoria, awarded diplomas and/or certificates to more than 900 students for the Spring 2016 semester. More than 325 graduates participated in the commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Peoria Civic Center.

Illinois Central College presented Dean's List honors to students who earned a grade point average of 3.5 - 3.99 on a 4.0 scale for Spring 2016 semester.

ICC students receiving a perfect 4.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) were honored by being named to the President's List for the Spring 2016 semester.

ICC Culinary Arts Institute students competed in the third round of the Heart of Illinois' Professional Chefs Association "Chopped" competition at the Peoria Riverfront on July 2.

The "Cryptococcus Keepers" team from the ICC Medical Laboratory Technician Program won the championship at the Annual Medical Laboratory Science Student Bowl held April 20 in Naperville, Ill.

Sixty ICC students and faculty advisors participated in the Skills USA State Championships in Springfield, Ill., April 21-23. Twelve students earned Gold, Silver or Bronze medals, and 34 students placed in the top 10 in their competitions.

ICC students traveled to Louisville Ky., to compete in the 52nd annual Skills USA National Leadership & Skills Conference June 20-25, 2016.

The ICC Livestock Judging Team recently placed third in the collegiate division of the National Swine Registry Picture Judging Contest sponsored by the National Swine Registry in West Lafayette, Ind..

ICC students presented projects relating to a variety of sustainability topics at the Student Sustainability Presentation Contest held on the East Peoria Campus on April 19.

Eleven members of the ICC Chamber Singers, joined by the choir from First United Methodist Church in Peoria, Ill., and singers from around the world, performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City on March 7.

ICC Health Careers students recently volunteered their time at the Health Careers Expo 2016 hosted by Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center in Peoria, Ill.
