Students Face Off, Plant the Seeds for Rewarding Careers at National Collegiate Landscape Competition
The National Collegiate Landscape Competition is an annual three-day competition and networking event for students enrolled in interior and exterior horticulture programs at two- and four-year colleges and universities from across the country. Each year, a different host location is selected, which gives the participants a chance to see different parts of the country and also increases the level of difficulty for some of the outdoor competitions. This year, ICC students traveled to Provo, Utah, March 15-18 to participate in the event. More than 750 landscape industry students demonstrate their skills in real-world, competitive events coupled with an outstanding Career Fair. The National Collegiate Landscape Competition provides landscape industry companies with unparalleled opportunities to meet and recruit next-generation landscape industry superstars. ICC students placed 23rd out of 60 teams competing and had students finish as high as 33rd out of the 672 individual students. ICC was the second highest ranking school in the state, finishing just behind College of DuPage, which placed 22nd.

Rodney Stewart and Wendy Streitmatter Selected as Best Presenters in COMM 212 Online
Rodney Stewart and Wendy Streitmatter were voted as "best presenters" in the online section of COMM 212 Public Speaking. In the online section, students meet live via webcam in a virtual classroom to deliver presentations. According to Assistant Prof. Joe Chianakas, Rodney's presentation was full of energy, enthusiasm, and humor, and Wendy delivered passionate, inspiring, and unique messages. The two were voted best class presenters for the first speaking assignment. Congratulations!

COMM 212 students voted Samuel Lawrence, of Avilla, Ind., as "best presenter" for his "provocative idea exchange" presentation! For each speech assignment in COMM 212, students write about the classmate they most admired. Samuel received several compliments from his classmates who called him professional, enthusiastic, inspiring, and intelligent. Professor Joe Chianakas agrees that Samuel is a great public speaker and most-deserving of "best class presentation" for the assignment.

ICC Student Timothy Griffith Wins ArtPop Peoria Award
ICC student Timothy Griffith recently won the ArtsPartners of Central Illinois ArtPop Peoria 2017 artists award for his submission "Who's Zooming Who." Tim's artwork will be displayed, along with the three other winning artists and the People's Choice Award recipient, on local billboards from June 2017 through June 2018. COMM 212 Students Select Most Admired Speakers
In COMM 212 Public Speaking, students vote on their most admired presenter for each assignment. For the first assignment-- a memorized performance of a famous speech-- there was a tie. Congratulations to Josiah "JZ" Ulrich and Jade Baillie. Students said Josiah had "incredible enthusiasm" and "delivered an amazing presentation." They also said "Jade's memorization and performance were unbelievable.So good!" Congrats to all Comm 212 students in your public speaking achievements, and congrats to Josiah and Jade for being the most admired speakers for the first presentation. Great work!

ICC Vocal Jazz Travels to New Orleans
ICC Vocal Jazz students, under the direction of Julie Clemens, had the amazing opportunity to sing on the main stage of the famed House of Blues in New Orleans over winter break! ICC's premier jazz singing group traveled to the Jazz Education Network's 2017 JENerations Jazz Festival and international conference in January. While at the conference, students were given the opportunity to sing at the House of Blues Gospel Brunch. With only a moment's notice, ICC Vocal Jazz gave a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime performance. They also were able to sing for national renowned jazz professionals and grow their craft through seminars and live performances from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the UNT Jazz Singers, and others. Congratulations to ICC's outstanding student vocalists!

ICC Welding Technology Program Students Earn Top Honors in the American Welding Society Poster Competition
ICC sophomores Jeff Joos, Donald Boyette, and Michelle Dutton, and Welding Technology Program graduate Connor Duestch earned four of the five top places in the American Welding Society (AWS) Poster Competition. The posters were displayed at FABTECH, the largest national welding fabrication convention and conference in the world, during the AWS Professional Program held in November in Las Vegas. The AWS Poster Session is an integral part of the AWS Professional Program and provides graphic displays of technical achievements in research, process development, and welding technology. "It is great to be involved with the level of student interest in researching and developing the posters and to experience this year's success in the competition," said ICC Welding Technology Program Professor Dr. Rick Polanin. The student's submissions were chosen from more than 40 entries from students grouped into community college, trade school, university, graduate school, and professional categories. Industry and education professionals judged participants' submissions for technical merit, research methods, analysis and display of data, and generalizations made about the research. ICC Students Compete in Post-Secondary Ag Student Competition
ICC Career and Technical students participated in the Annual Fall Post-Secondary Agricultural Student (PAS) conference and contest at the Bloomington IAA building on Friday, Oct. 28. Students completed in interview contests and in industry related practicums. Students from the Horticulture, Agriculture, and Diesel Powered Equipment Program took home many individual and team awards.

ICC Students Win First Place at the 48-Hour Filmmakers Fest 2016
Several ICC students won First Place in "Best Film" for their team submission of the film "Future Mr. Shop 'n' Save" at the 48-Hour Filmmakers Fest 2016 at the Peoria Riverfront Museum on Oct. 15. ICC students, including Graphic Design, Multimedia and undeclared majors, as well as an alum, teamed up and competed on their own time and outside of any ICC curriculum or class. The 48-Hour Filmmakers Fest is a competition open to professionals and non-professionals alike and gives aspiring filmmakers of all ages the chance to create a 3-5-minute movie in just 48 hours. Each film, from writing and shooting to editing and sound design, had to be created during Fri., Oct. 7, and Sun., Oct. 9. On Sat., Oct. 15, all submissions were screened at the Giant Screen Theater at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, and the winner and runner-up were announced. ICC Welcomes Medical Laboratory Technician Program Students for Fall 2016
ICC is pleased to announce students in its Medical Laboratory Technician Program for Fall 2016! Students in the ICC Medical Laboratory Technician Program complete 65 hours of coursework to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. Clinical experiences are provided in labs in Illinois and Iowa. Under the supervision of Medical Laboratory Scientists, MLTs perform most of the common laboratory tests in a medical laboratory. They use microscopes and other high-tech, computer-operated equipment to analyze body fluids and cells; look for bacteria, parasites and other organisms; analyze the chemical content of fluids; match blood for transfusion; and test for drug levels in the blood to gauge a patient's response to treatment. ICC Welcomes Dental Hygienist Program Students for Fall 2016
ICC is pleased to announce students in its Dental Hygienist Program for Fall 2016! Students in the ICC Dental Hygienist Program complete 81.5 hours to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. Students receive extensive clinical experience in the ICC Dental Hygiene Clinic and selected agencies. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and a regional/state examination for registration as a Dental Hygienist in Illinois and in other states. The dental hygienist works under the supervision of the dentist in dental offices and other health agencies by performing duties delegated by the dentist. Duties include cleaning teeth, exposing x-rays, providing oral healthcare instructions to patients, and maintaining patient records.
