ICC Vocal Jazz Travels to New Orleans

ICC Vocal Jazz students, under the direction of Julie Clemens, had the amazing opportunity to sing on the main stage of the famed House of Blues in New Orleans over winter break! ICC's premier jazz singing group traveled to the Jazz Education Network's 2017 JENerations Jazz Festival and international conference in January. While at the conference, students were given the opportunity to sing at the House of Blues Gospel Brunch. With only a moment's notice, ICC Vocal Jazz gave a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime performance. They also were able to sing for national renowned jazz professionals and grow their craft through seminars and live performances from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the UNT Jazz Singers, and others. Congratulations to ICC's outstanding student vocalists!

ICC Welding Technology Program Students Earn Top Honors in the American Welding Society Poster Competition

ICC sophomores Jeff Joos, Donald Boyette, and Michelle Dutton, and Welding Technology Program graduate Connor Duestch earned four of the five top places in the American Welding Society (AWS) Poster Competition. The posters were displayed at FABTECH, the largest national welding fabrication convention and conference in the world, during the AWS Professional Program held in November in Las Vegas. The AWS Poster Session is an integral part of the AWS Professional Program and provides graphic displays of technical achievements in research, process development, and welding technology. "It is great to be involved with the level of student interest in researching and developing the posters and to experience this year's success in the competition," said ICC Welding Technology Program Professor Dr. Rick Polanin. The student's submissions were chosen from more than 40 entries from students grouped into community college, trade school, university, graduate school, and professional categories. Industry and education professionals judged participants' submissions for technical merit, research methods, analysis and display of data, and generalizations made about the research. ICC Students Compete in Post-Secondary Ag Student Competition

ICC Career and Technical students participated in the Annual Fall Post-Secondary Agricultural Student (PAS) conference and contest at the Bloomington IAA building on Friday, Oct. 28. Students completed in interview contests and in industry related practicums. Students from the Horticulture, Agriculture, and Diesel Powered Equipment Program took home many individual and team awards.

ICC Proudly Recognizes Student Veterans for Fall 2016

ICC is proud to announce its student veterans for the Fall 2016 semester. The ICC Veterans Affairs office assists students with federal and state veterans education benefits, academic advisement, counseling referrals, VA benefits advisement and community resource contact. Congratulations to our student veterans who are attending school while trying to juggle families, jobs, and navigate the VA system after they have already completed their military career. ICC Students Win First Place at the 48-Hour Filmmakers Fest 2016

Several ICC students won First Place in "Best Film" for their team submission of the film "Future Mr. Shop 'n' Save" at the 48-Hour Filmmakers Fest 2016 at the Peoria Riverfront Museum on Oct. 15. ICC students, including Graphic Design, Multimedia and undeclared majors, as well as an alum, teamed up and competed on their own time and outside of any ICC curriculum or class. The 48-Hour Filmmakers Fest is a competition open to professionals and non-professionals alike and gives aspiring filmmakers of all ages the chance to create a 3-5-minute movie in just 48 hours. Each film, from writing and shooting to editing and sound design, had to be created during Fri., Oct. 7, and Sun., Oct. 9. On Sat., Oct. 15, all submissions were screened at the Giant Screen Theater at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, and the winner and runner-up were announced. ICC Welcomes Medical Laboratory Technician Program Students for Fall 2016

ICC is pleased to announce students in its Medical Laboratory Technician Program for Fall 2016! Students in the ICC Medical Laboratory Technician Program complete 65 hours of coursework to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. Clinical experiences are provided in labs in Illinois and Iowa. Under the supervision of Medical Laboratory Scientists, MLTs perform most of the common laboratory tests in a medical laboratory. They use microscopes and other high-tech, computer-operated equipment to analyze body fluids and cells; look for bacteria, parasites and other organisms; analyze the chemical content of fluids; match blood for transfusion; and test for drug levels in the blood to gauge a patient's response to treatment. ICC Welcomes Dental Hygienist Program Students for Fall 2016

ICC is pleased to announce students in its Dental Hygienist Program for Fall 2016! Students in the ICC Dental Hygienist Program complete 81.5 hours to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. Students receive extensive clinical experience in the ICC Dental Hygiene Clinic and selected agencies. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and a regional/state examination for registration as a Dental Hygienist in Illinois and in other states. The dental hygienist works under the supervision of the dentist in dental offices and other health agencies by performing duties delegated by the dentist. Duties include cleaning teeth, exposing x-rays, providing oral healthcare instructions to patients, and maintaining patient records. The physical therapist assistant (PTA) works under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist to perform a variety of activities designed to restore physical function and prevent disability of patients of all ages. Program graduates find employment in a variety of settings including long-term care facilities, hospitals, school system, outpatient clinics, and home care agencies. ICC Welcomes Medical Coder Program Students for Fall 2016

ICC is pleased to welcome students in the Medical Coder Program for Fall 2016! Students in the Medical Coder Program complete 27 hours of coursework at ICC in order to earn a certificate. Upon completion, graduates can expect to be employed in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, physician offices, billing services and insurance companies. The program can be completed in approximately three semesters. Graduates have the option to take the certification exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) to obtain entry- and advanced-level credentials. ICC Welcomes Medical Office Administrative Assistant Program Students for Fall 2016

ICC is pleased to welcome students in the Medical Office Administrative Assistant Program for Fall 2016! Students in the Medical Office Administrative Assistant Program at ICC complete a total of 26 hours, including classroom and practical experience, to earn a certificate. Graduates usually work in a physician's office, but job opportunities are available in hospitals, pharmacies, insurance companies, or other health care organizations. Medical office assistants often serve as the office's "face to the public," setting up office appointments, greeting patients, and screening telephone calls. Some duties also may include basic bookkeeping, maintaining or transcribing medical records, completing medical forms, and ordering equipment and supplies. Many massage therapists enter the profession because of their interest in helping others and in the healthcare field. They work in a variety of settings and may receive physician referrals to complement traditional medical treatment for illness, injury, and pain. ICC is pleased to welcome students into the Surgical Technologist Program for Fall 2016! Surgical Technologists plan and facilitate the surgical environment of assigned cases and provide intra-operative expertise to a wide variety of surgical diagnoses. They provide quality and age-appropriate care to patients aged newborn through adult. Surgical Technologists must graduate from an Accredited Surgical Technology Program, such as Illinois Central College and may be certified or registered with the State of Illinois. Students in the ICC program have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of clinical experiences in all the surgical specialties at two to three Bloomington/Peoria hospitals. ICC Welcomes Respiratory Therapy Program Students for Fall 2016

ICC is proud to welcome students in the Respiratory Therapy Program for Fall 2016! Respiratory care is a health care specialty involving the prevention, treatment, management and rehabilitation of people with lung problems. As part of the medical team, respiratory care personnel are instrumental in life support and emergency measures. Practitioners must be experts in providing specialized and selective therapeutic respiratory care in such areas as medical gas administration, humidity and aerosol administration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and ventilatory support. The respiratory care practitioner must also be capable of performing pulmonary function studies, blood gas analysis and other related physiologic monitoring. ICC Welcomes Practical Nursing Program Students for Fall 2016

ICC is proud to welcome students into its Practical Nursing Program for fall 2016. The Practical Nursing Program is designed to prepare the nursing graduate to provide quality care to patients under the direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician, dentist, or podiatrist. LPNs monitor vital signs, change dressings, prepare and give injections, assist patients with personal hygiene, and meet their emotional needs. In some instances, such as in nursing homes, licensed practical nurses evaluate residents' needs, develop care plans, and supervise nursing aides. ICC Chamber Singers Perform for Loaves and Fish Guests

ICC Chamber Singers recently took time out from their music retreat to sing a great spiritual for the guests dining at the Loaves and Fish feeding ministry at the First United Methodist Church in Peoria, Ill. A Loaves and Fish volunteer told the group that they had an unexpected effect on one of their reserved weekly guests. The volunteer said that, as the students started to sing, the woman stopped eating and turned to listen with a smile on her face. The volunteer said it is the first time she has seen this guest smile in months. Thank you, ICC Chamber Singers, for spreading your joy of music!

The Nursing Program at ICC prepares graduates for work in health care facilities such as clinics, hospitals, physician offices, home health care agencies, or extended care facilities. ICC Students Win Blick Madness Painting Competition

ICC students brought home a gold trophy from the Blick Madness Painting Competition, hosted by Dick Blick art store, on September 22, 2016. The students competed as a group and painted a fall scene, complete with campfire and pumpkins. The students had just an hour and a half to complete the painting. The group competed against other two- and four-year institutions in Illinois, including: Western Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, Monmouth College, Eureka College, Bradley University, and Carl Sandburg. ICC students have won the gold trophy in three out of the last five competitions.

ICC Horticulture Program Students Participate in Design Challenge

ICC Horticulture Program students currently are participating in the "Come Alive Outside Design Challenge," which provides an opportunity for teams of post-secondary and secondary students to work together with landscape professionals to design and build engaging outdoor learning environments at schools and childcare facilities. ICC students will partner with Come Alive Outside, The Kitchen Community, and Christy Webber Landscapes to create an outdoor learning environment for Hanson Park Elementary School in Chicago, Ill. Teams have until Dec. 2 to finalize proposals, which will be judged by a professional panel and voted on by the community of teachers and parents at Hanson Park. All submissions will be featured at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show in March 2017. The winning design will be announced in December, with the winning design scheduled to be built on the school grounds in the spring of 2017.

ICC Student Matthew Goodyear Attends NASA Workshop

ICC Mechanical Engineering Technology student Matthew Goodyear was recently selected to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program in Huntsville, Ala., October 25-28. There he will have the opportunity to experience NASA first-hand and complete a project. NCAS encourages STEM students to finish a two-year degree or transfer to a four-year university to pursue a NASA-related field or career. Congratulations, Matthew!

ICC Students Volunteer for Worldwide Day of Play 2016

Three outstanding students in the early childhood education program gained some valuable real-world experience as volunteers at the Worldwide Day of Play at Glen Oak Park on Saturday, September 10. Students facilitated play as children were encouraged to try weaving with natural materials and construct critter houses for critter puppets, including a cricket, eagle, opossum, and butterfly. The volunteers gained a greater appreciation of the developmental potential of young children and learning by witnessing their imaginations and creativity.

Illinois Central College Announces 2016-17 Livestock Judging Team Members

These sophomore students will represent Illinois Central College at local, state and national livestock judging contests during the fall and spring semesters. Students in competition will evaluate classes of livestock on both phenotype (how the animals look) and genotype (an animal's genetic capabilities) and compare them to an "ideal". The students are scored on how closely they rank the animals to an official placing. In addition, the students give oral reasons to contest officials to justify their placings. These reasons are scored as well and help students sharpen their critical thinking skills and communication ability.
