Illinois Poet Laureate Angela Jackson to present to ICC students, community
East Peoria, IL (04/05/2022) — Award-winning poet, novelist, playwright, and Illinois Poet Laureate, Angela Jackson will virtually present readings and conversations about poetry to the Illinois Central College community on Wednesday, May 4 at 3 pm via Zoom. Earlier in the day, Jackson will discuss the finer elements of poetry and the creative process with ICC Creative Writing students.

Her tremendous body of work and commitment to amplifying the voices of those who are under-represented exemplifies the caliber of one who is chosen for the laureate role," said Illinois Central College Dean of Humanities Dr. Lonetta Oliver. "It is so meaningful to us that she is connecting with our students as her philosophies and practices embody our college's values."
Jackson's novels and plays have been widely recognized. She has received two American Book Awards; the Shelley Memorial Award of the Poetry Society of America; a Pushcart Prize; the Illinois Center for the Book Heritage Award; the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame Fuller Award; and the Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent from Chicago State University.
Her work includes Voodoo/Love Magic (1974); Dark Legs and Silk Kisses: The Beatitudes of the Spinners (1993), which won the Carl Sandburg Award and the Chicago Sun-Times/Friends of Literature Book of the Year Award; And All These Roads Be Luminous: Poems Selected and New (1998), which was nominated for the National Book Award; and It Seems Like a Mighty Long Time (2015), which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, the Pen/Open Book Award, a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, and a finalist for the Milt Kessler Poetry Prize.
