Illinois Central College Hosts LGBTQ+ Legacy Wall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

East Peoria, IL (10/03/2023) — Illinois Central College will host the Legacy Wall, featuring notable LGBTQ+ people from October 9 - 20 in the Student Lounge on the East Peoria Campus. The Legacy Wall is a traveling exhibit of nearly 400 square-feet, featuring digitally interactive "mini-biographies" of LGBTQ+ people who have contributed to over 20 distinct fields of history and culture.

A reception will be held on Monday, October 9 at 2:00 PM at the unveiling of the exhibit, with guest speaker Victor Salvo, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Legacy Project. A native Chicagoan and 1998 inductee of the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame, Salvo has been an activist for over four decades. He has worked with charities, election campaigns, and advocacy groups to educate the public about the many societal contributions of LGBTQ individuals, and to eliminate bullying of LGBTQ youth.

The Legacy Wall was created by the Legacy Project, a Chicago-based cultural and educational non-profit organization dedicated to researching and promoting LGBTQ+ people who have made an impact on history and culture. Historical figures like British mathematician Alan Turing, Astronaut Sally Ride, Renaissance artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci, and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo are just some of the 125 biographies included in this exhibit.

ICC celebrates the LGBTQ+ community during October with the hosting of the Legacy Wall and National Coming Out Day on October 11. ICC also supports the work of our student organization, Understanding Individuality Through Education (UNITE), which provides a safe atmosphere for any members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies on campus.
