ICC Harvesting Dreams Founders' Day Celebration May 6, 2023
East Peoria, IL (05/03/2023) — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Harvesting Dreams program at Illinois Central College is designed to identify and minimize issues and challenges facing African American students attending ICC to increase their recruitment, retention, and academic success. Founded in 2007 by James (Agbara) Bryson, the program focuses on working with young African American students to grow their confidence and find their pathway to successful lives and careers.
Harvesting Dreams has become a safe space for African American students at ICC. The program hosts diverse guest speakers to hold dialogues about how current issues affect African American students, and how best to overcome obstacles unique to them. Seeing people like themselves being successful in life is a significant motivator for many students in the program.
The Founders' Day Celebration will honor those who have been involved in Harvesting Dreams and helped to make it so effective. The Harvesting Dreams founder, Mr. Bryson, will be in attendance, along with many current and former students, to share and discuss the positive impacts Harvesting Dreams is having in the community.
Tod Daniels, the Harvesting Dreams program coordinator, explained that they plan to start implementing the Harvesting Dreams program into the Peoria Public Schools system as early as fall of 2023. The expectation is that getting students into the program before college will result in even further progress in African American college retention and career credentialing.
This celebration is open to the public and will take place from 10:30 am until 1:00 pm this Saturday, May 6 in the ICC East Peoria Campus Tranquility Room, room number 210A. For more information, call (309) 276-7754 or email trio@icc.edu.
